To ensure the safety of yourself and those around you, here are five essential safety tips for handling industrial gases in your workshop:
- PROPER STORAGE: Store industrial gases in a well-ventilated area that is specifically designated for gas storage. Ensure that cylinders are secured upright with chains or straps to prevent them from falling. Keep incompatible gases separate and clearly label all cylinders with their contents.
- VENTILATION: Always work in a well-ventilated area to prevent the accumulation of gas. If working indoors, ensure that the area has proper ventilation, such as exhaust fans or open windows. This helps to reduce the risk of gas buildup and potential exposure.
- HANDLING AND TRANSPORT: When transporting cylinders, use a suitable trolley or cart designed for that purpose. Do not drag, roll, or drop cylinders, as this can damage the valves and lead to leaks. Always keep cylinders upright to prevent damage to the valve.
- PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (PPE): Wear appropriate PPE when handling industrial gases, including gloves, safety glasses, and a face shield. Depending on the gas being used, a respirator may also be necessary. PPE helps to protect against potential leaks or spills.
- EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS: Have an emergency plan in place in case of a gas leak or other incident. Ensure that all workers are trained on how to respond to emergencies and know the location of emergency equipment, such as eyewash stations and fire extinguishers.
