They remove dirt and corrosion from the wire before it enters the gun, which reduces wear on the gun's contact tips and liners and helps prevent nozzle clogs. Wire feed lubricant can be used to re-treat the pads to lubricate the wire and help keep it from locking up or bindng as it moves through the gun liner. Not recommended for use with aluminum MIG welding wire.
